[Discussion] Global Recession's potential damage to SCM and CSGO item price? Open discussion.

Hi there. First time posting :)
The last global recession was back in 2008. All the asset were heavily corrected or even become undervalue. Bitcoin was started 2009. And CSGO was started in 2012. Just an open discussion here:
Any thoughts about "IF" there's a global recession. How bad it will or might hurt the virtual asset? Do you think the CSGO trading ecosystem might also get hurt? EG. People who wants to cash out faster than before so the price will drop significantly.
Another plus point to discuss: We have noticed that the CSGO item prices are heavily influenced by the Chinese Collector and Trader. Any thoughts about "IF" Chinese Economy situation turn sour or facing correction. Will it also affect the CSGO item price?
This is more or less like an Macroeconomic discussion based on the thing I know. I believe that some of you here might also have some good point about this topic.
My opinion toward this topic is quite simple. I think the virtual market haven't been truly tested by the real world market. It might be just a peanut comparing with the real market. However, I think all the virtual item's price might be relatively overvalued in the history, especially with the high-end items. Therefore, I am a bit cautious about buying/investing them at the moment.
This is one of my interested topic toward CSGO item trading and investing. Please leave your 2 cent. Any thoughts are welcome. Also, correct me if I am wrong. Cheers :)

Blockchain Meets it QAnon

When Jesus spit biblical rhymes on the mount, he too talked about the marshmallow test in the form of two gates that one could go through in life. One gate was narrow and lead to a difficult path; the other gate was wide and lead to an easy path. Most people, according to Jesus, took the easy path which lead to their ruin (Matthew 7:13–14). There can be no question that taking back your sovereignty is the hard path, but you must remember the alternative is destruction. Those who procure Zcash shall be part of the kingdom of God in the post-fiat world. More importantly, those who remain shitcoin pagans or bitcoin Jews will risk burning in the eternal flames of the surveillance state.
Not by any means the craziest paragraph in Intolerant Zeal a jeremiad by blockchain’s QAnon, Sixteen Holder, that combines religious history, evolutionary psychology, and meat-eating with ZCash as the savior. Is it performance art? Advertising? A sign of our times?
In other news, the Devil Facebook’s Libra is hiring economists (I have done some consulting work for a competitor):
Novi is a Facebook subsidiary whose goal is to provide financial services for Libra, a new global currency powered by blockchain technology. The first product Novi will introduce is a digital wallet, which will be available in Messenger, WhatsApp and as a standalone app. The first version of Novi will support peer-to-peer payments and a few other ways to pay such as QR codes which small merchants can use to accept payments in Libra. Over time there will be many other use-cases for Novi including in-store payments, integrations into Point-of-Sale systems, and more. When launched, Novi will have strong fraud and privacy protections. The Novi digital wallet is expected to launch in 2020.
The Novi economics team is seeking exceptional candidates from all fields, with a special focus on applied microeconomics, development, macroeconomics, finance, and market design, to join our team. Individuals in this role are expected to have deep expertise and the ability to leverage economic theory into real-world, practical solutions for blockchain based problems. We encourage applicants from all levels of seniority to apply, including PhD holders with subsequent work experience.
Depending on background, economists in this role will initiate and execute projects around topics such as financial inclusion, the macroeconomic aspects of the Libra currency, the economics of digitization and cryptocurrency markets. Candidates should demonstrate a strong research background and the ability to disseminate findings clearly and succinctly. This job will involve both foundational product work and academic research centered around the Novi digital wallet and the Libra currency.
Research Scientist, Novi Economics (Blockchain) Responsibilities
• Drive economics-based product decisions and research agendas involving the Libra currency and the Novi wallet.
• Work closely with other teams, including product and engineering, to identify and answer economics-related questions.
• Communicate findings clearly and concisely to leadership and other stakeholders.
• Author novel economics research.
Minimum Qualifications
• PhD in economics or finance or 6+ years experience working in finance.
• Experience in a general purpose programming language such as knowledge in R or Python.

Gold standard? Federal Reserve?

Gold standard? End the Federal Reserve?
I'm pretty sure this has been debated before and asked a lot in this forum but pardon me being new here.
I am a history major and have been trying to read as much about economics as I can during my spare time. I'm about finished with Gregory Mankiw's Principles of Macroeconomics and plan to read his Principles of Microeconomics soon enough. I have also read Thomas Sowell's Basic Economics and am about halfway through reading Henry Hazlitt's Economics in One Lesson. I have also recently seen Milton Friedman's Free to Choose and also plan on reading his works, as well as Friedrich Hayek and Frederick Bastiat.
One of the topics I really want to delve into is in regard to the merits of having a Federal Reserve and whether it is more beneficial to go back to a gold standard. I think that there is an economic consensus that the money supply has a great correlation with the level of inflation and the value of the dollar, as the more that is printed, the more worthless the dollar becomes, and the less printed it is, the more worth it becomes. Particularly also, fiat currency tends to be valued only in, so, far, as there is confidence in the financial systems.
For this reason, there seems to be two issues and questions at hand. The first one is if it would be more beneficial to go back to a gold standard? I understand that there are various ways in which this could occur. This could include going back to the physical use of gold as money, pegging the dollar back to gold, or begging it to some other commodity such as Bitcoin. The purpose of any of these approaches is to control the money supply by something that is finite and hence limited in nature.
This seems to solve the problem of controlling the quantity of the dollar. Some have criticized the gold standard due to the overly restricted circulation of currency that has historically led to deflationary, as opposed to inflationary periods, which could be just as devastating as inflationary periods.
The second question and problem concern the Federal Reserve. To what extent is it beneficial to have a Fed? Should the Fed be reconstructed, and or more heavily regulated? Should we outright do away with the Fed? Or should the Fed be kept the way it is? On the one hand, it makes sense in theory to have an institution such as the Fed to help regulate banks, ensuring that things such as bank runs, and or banking disasters are preventing. It also seems sensible in theory to have an institution such as the Fed, which is independent of the government, to help in coordinating monetary policy.
However, in practice, it also seems that the Fed has often been the cause of such disasters such as the Great Depression and the Great Recession by creating boom and bust cycles through arbitrarily changing interest rates, and through its various tactics at influencing monetary policy and controlling the money supply. A similar, yet different issue would be laws passed by the government encouraging risky lending such as forcing financial institutions, whether private or public to give out bad loans to risky people such as those who can't afford to take the loan.
Would it not make more sense to simply let the "invisible hand" (the forces of supply and demand) to allocate the money supply and interest rates? If there is more demand for borrowing this will push interest rates up, as banks and other financial institutions would want to charge higher interests and they would ideally want to be careful as to who they are lending money to. If there is a greater demand for saving than lending, this would push interest rates down as banks would not want to give out as much money in interest and other financial institutions would want to encourage more borrowing.
I would appreciate any resource recommendations whether they be books or other media platforms that you think do a good job at tackling any of these two issues.

Roundtable Discussion on Prosperity and Opportunities, Technologies and Mechanisms That Shape The Future of DeFi

Last week, Anthurine, CMO of QuarkChain, joined a roundtable discussion that was organized by Guowei Finance. Here is the summary.
Q1: When any new thing is born, it would undergo different stages from birth, to budding, to emerging, to prospering, and finally to becoming a common utility. DeFi is one of the examples. Currently, more and more users are participating in DeFi loans and more entrepreneurs are joining the DeFi industry with over 1000 projects. Can you share with us what your expectations are for this industry regarding its future growth and scale, given its skyrocketing scale, high growth, and lockup volume?
A1: The previous guests had already given us a great overview on the latest developments in DeFi. While we should not omit a number of problems that it presents recently, especially regarding financial assets, DeFi on the whole presents itself as a more open and more convenient financial application with great future potential. The problems that are present now will not shake the foundation of DeFi development but to expose some problems early on and make DeFi even stronger.
DeFi has several advantages: firstly, it can lower the costs by replacing some tasks done by the central node and rebate these saved costs to other participants.
Secondly, it offers a high level of transparency. Currently financial institutions are highly specialized to a degree that even Warren Buffett did not understand the prospectus of the subprime mortgages. The contracts behind DeFi products are open, which is a stark contrast to traditional financial products that are wrapped around in layers.
Thirdly, DeFi bears a high level of openness and convenience. Centralized institutions require high levels of regulations that are of high costs. In Comparison, DeFi opens for everyone to participate.
However, there are still some problems with DeFi. Currently, because of some problems with ease of operations and cost of learning, its user base is not scaling enough and cannot rely on the law of large numbers like traditional finance does to guarantee its security. As a result, security depends entirely on the code of projects and such dynamics has exposed several problems. For instance, the oracle manipulation attack several weeks ago or the more recent ERC777 contract loophole attack, these attacks prompted many DeFi to employ some centralized methods to guarantee security.
The above reasons lead to only a small circle of people using DeFi and yet to evangelize.
As for expectations regarding the future, I see a possibility where existing DeFi will combine with traditional finance, also known as cefi, to enhance the transparency of the network and improve efficiency by using DeFi to lower the cost of DeFi. On the other hand, cefi will bring in the user scale and a wide suite of products and thus provide better services for more people, enabling DeFi to become an open finance.
Going back to the present, with the negative interest rate in the backdrop, traditional finance is coming to blockchain for better yields. If we can seize the opportunity to marry defi and cefi well, then the combined effect will increase the existing scale of DeFi dramatically. It can be ten-fold or hundred-fold; it’s difficult to estimate.
Q2: Currently, there are some noticeable trends in the space, one is regarding users and the other regarding industry. After we see some attacks occured recently, we also discovered the 7-day lockup amount has increased significantly. Such discovery is an intriguing one and what are your thoughts on that? Does this trend show that DeFi has obtained the basic trust of the user and is enjoying the scale of its user base to participate in the market?
Recently, the lockup amount has increased yet the number of participating accounts did not grow at a corresponding rate. The two pieces of statistics point to the fact that scaled participation has not taken place yet. Another clear mark is that ETH is not congested recently. So I think we are a few miles away from reaching the scaling effect.
It also means that, rather than more people are participating, this phenomenon is taking place as the existing liquidity is staked into contracts. The increase in assets confirms the trust towards DeFi and the optimism asset holders have regarding the DeFi development. Even though DeFi has been a hot topic for the past few months, compared to the community of cryptocurrencies, DeFi remains a much smaller circle since its application is difficult to use with security concerns. The phenomenon of huge increase in lock-up amount can be attributed to the promotion of DeFi on media outlets which brings in new users who discover the functions and values of DeFi. However, whether these users and capital will stay for the long time will remain in question.
Macroeconomic reasons also played a huge role in the increase in lock-up. There are limited ideas in the secondary markets to make a profit with negative yield in the traditional financial market. Even the US crude oil dropped below zero for the first time in history! To hedge against risks in traditional markets, more capital flew into DeFi.
Q3: It would suffice to say that DeFi is really ‘hot’ now and attracts eyeballs from many. Currently, most of the DeFi products and platforms are running on existing public chains like Maker running top of the Ethereum platform and EOS REX on top of EOS. Among all the ecosystem use cases, DeFi is the application that has the highest volume. So what are some of the things necessary from public chains to provide in order to promote and support DeFi platform development? From a public chain system standpoint, what kind of improvement and enhancement are necessary in DeFi systems in terms of technologies and mechanisms?
Currently, DeFi applications are running on top of the Ethereum platform. Because of the design of Ethereum, these DeFi applications bear a few problems:
  1. Slow operations. Network speed is slow and project developments is slow as the date for ETH2.0 to go live remains unknown
  2. Smart contract tokens cannot directly deploy smart contracts and require additional developments. Every time one would require to have transaction fees using ETH, which lowers the composability and ease of use for DeFi.
  3. Security issues
QuarkChain has strategic approaches targeting DeFi. Since its inception, QuarkChain aims to design the next generation of DeFi network with these goals: higher security, lower transactions, high usability, and more convenience. The QuarkChain team develops its own infrastructure layer using the heterogeneous sharding framework. The framework solves all the existing problems faced by Ethereum and provides plenty of functionalities to make DeFi easier to use.
Let me give you a quick overview of what heterogenous sharding is before we further delve into the approach in DeFi of QuarkChain.
Bitcoin, anonymous tokens like ZCash and Grin, ETH, EOS, and all the pubic chains are all considered under the bigger umbrella of blockchain technology. The essence of blockchain technology comes from the arrangement and combination of the following four components:
At present, for many public chains, the four elements are fixed. Once a consensus, a transaction mode, an ledger model and a token economics are selected, they can no longer be changed, which limits the flexibility and adaptability of the whole blockchain system.
QuarkChain is the first public chain that implemented heterogenous sharding technology. Heterogenous sharding treats each shard as one chain and each chain can configure the four components we mentioned based on its needs. Such design allows new technologies to be incorporated into a chain and such chains can be embedded into the overall system design easily. So different chains can host different consensus mechanisms, token economics, and ledger models.
Through implementing the proprietary Boson consensus, the bottom layer is highly flexible and supports cross shard transactions and contract deployment. Different DeFi contracts can be deployed on different shards to realize different effects. As such, the DeFi functionalities of QuarkChain has the following advantages:
  1. High usability of its services: through multi-chain/shard design, the entire network can horizontally expand based on the demand of users’ throughput. The maximum throughput capacity of the entire network, after third-party verification, can reach million TPS or above. Moreover, when there appears popular applications, the application will only affect the shard chain that the application is located with no effects on the other shards, which greatly enhances the usability of the network.
  2. Low transaction fees: The high throughput of QuarkChain also brings about another great advantage which is to significantly lower users’ transaction fees. We expect to lower the fees by tenfold, if not more. The advantages of low transaction fees can help realize more DeFi scenarios that were previously impossible on the Ethereum platform due to fee concerns, such as multi-asset combinations, multi-contract deployment, or high frequency operations.
  3. Multinative assets: Native token refers to tokens that are directly issued by the blockchain infrastructure for maintaining normal operations. These tokens are used for realizing equity and for implementing fixed functions of the blockchain systems. Prime examples are Bitcoin, Ethereum, and QKC. On the basis of application protocols, tokens that are built on top of existing blockchain systems and are used for deploying smart contracts are known as smart contract tokens. It is widely adopted on the dApps of different public chains, of which ERC20 protocol is the most famous.99% of the tokens issued on public chains are smart contract tokens. Compared to native tokens, smart contract tokens are like second-class citizens which have many limitations, one of which is its inability to pay for transaction fees. QuarkChain allows developers and users to issue native assets to directly pay for transaction fees and participate in DeFi activities with no needs to purchase QKC. In addition, from the developers’ standpoint, they only need to maintain one set of code to support many DeFi contracts that support different multinative assets, which makes the development process more efficient.
  4. Composability of cross-chain DeFi: While there are multiple shards running, there will be challenges as to how to use cross-chain protocol to realize users’ participation of DeFi activities across different chains. This is also known as the problem of composability. In fact, the founder of Ethereum Vitalik penned a post where he delineates how the future ETH2.0 will realize the composability of cross-chain DeFi: In fact, QuarkChain already implemented Vitalik’s vision, through multinative assets, users can seamlessly participate on the DeFi activities of all shards anytime.

Bitcoin slipped below $10,000 on Thursday after the Federal Reserve cut benchmark lending rates by 25 basis points.
The BTC/USD instrument settled a new session low towards $9,585.86 on San Francisco-based Coinbase exchange. That brought the pair’s week-to-date losses close to 7 percent.
The move downhill occurred despite the presence of so-called bullish catalysts, mainly the recent drone attacks on Saudi Arabia oil production facilities that choked the world’s oil supply by 5 percent. The latest rate cut announcement and its immediate impact on bitcoin are reminiscent of how investors are not treating the cryptocurrency bitcoin as a safe-haven asset in the times of macroeconomic and geopolitical crisis.
Bulls, nevertheless, see bitcoin at new highs in the coming times. According to Arthur Hayes, the CEO & co-founder of controversial crypto-derivatives exchange BitMEX, bitcoin would surge to $20,000 after taking cues from the Fed’s dovish sentiment.

The thesis aims to study to impact of this new currency on the impossibility of governments to make use of monetary policy to influence the amount of currency in circulation as a way to fuel economic growth through lower interest rates (incentivating investment, consumption, borrowing and spending), taxation of Bitcoin tranactions, inflation control by Central Banks, impact of the anonimity of transactions and Bitcoin wallets, among other themes of interest.
I consider the macroeconomic impact of Bitcoin transactions an extremely interesting theme, and also an innovative theme as Bitcoins' relevance in the monetary market is fairly recent, so it's a theme that's not subject to much research so far.
Any suggestions for further themes to analyze related to the economic impact of Bitcoins in modern economies are more than welcome. Any and all articles you may suggest relevant to the study of Bitcoins, economic papers already written analyzing this subject, and all other related media that may help me with the development of my thesis are more than welcome.
Thank you in advance for all the help provided. Cheers.
So far, the most centralized website that summarized research done on this topic was found here.
EDIT: I have very limited knowledge on how the whole Bitcoin system works. So far the best articles for a complete beginner I found explaining the mechanics of the sistem were this one and this one. I find them quite limited though and wish to gain an advanced level of understanding on the mechanics behind the Bitcoin system. If anyone could provide me with a few links from complete beginner level to advanced level on how the bitcoins system works, it would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT 2: I am waiting for a reply from my MSc Macroeconomic Analysis teacher regarding the proposal of my thesis theme and my request for his guidance of this thesis. I will soon receive a reply to this e-mail and post the reaction of my teacher here. Hopefully we'll all be surprised and he will tell me to go ahead with this theme and that he will supervise it.
EDIT3: My Macroeconomic Analysis teacher just replied he would take a look at my suggestion for a PhD thesis at night and give me an answer regarding his opinion on the subject and his availability to be my thesis supervisor. Only a few hours left until I know if I can blatantly challenge the Acamedia world of Macroeconomics with my thesis.
EDIT4: The thesis theme was accepted under the broader scope of the analysis of currency substitution.

Fed's Bullard says a rate cut may be 'warranted soon'

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 41%. (I'm a bot)
A U.S. interest rate cut "May be warranted soon" given the rising risk to economic growth posed by global trade tensions as well as weak U.S. inflation, St. Louis Federal Reserve president James Bullard said Monday, the first Fed official to say recent events may require a central bank response.
Bullard said that while the Fed cannot respond to every change in the rapidly evolving trade feud between the U.S. and other top trading nations, recent events like the unexpected announcement of new tariffs on Mexican imports have created "An environment of elevated uncertainty...that could feed back to U.S. macroeconomic performance" as the global economy slows.
Along with weak inflation and warning signs from the U.S. bond market, "a downward policy rate adjustment may be warranted soon" to help boost inflation expectations and help ease fears that have emerged in bond prices of a sharper-than-expected U.S. slowdown.
Along with trade, he has been among the more concerned at the Fed about the fact that rates on 10-year bonds have fallen below 3-month yields as well as below the federal funds rates itself.
"A downward adjustment of the policy rate may help re-center inflation and inflation expectations at the 2 percent target," as well as provide "Insurance" against a sharper than expected economic slowdown, Bullard said, comparable to rate cuts the Fed made in the mid-1990s to nudge along that expansion.
Trump also surprised markets last week when he said he would slap a set of increasing tariffs on Mexican imports, not with some economic end involved but to try to force the country to tighten control of its border with the U.S. The Fed next meets in two weeks to reconsider its rate policy and issue update economic projections.

Interview with the CEO of Swap.Online Alexander Noxon

Interview with the CEO of Swap.Online Alexander Noxon
Today our official representative, Vladislav Sopov, interviewed Alexander Noxon, CEO of SwapOnline. Alexander answers the most interesting questions about yourself, blockchain-industry favourite games and shares his thoughts about the future!
Alexander Noxon
Please introduce yourself.
Sasha Noxon, programmer, website developer.
What determined your personal development as a programmer and developer?
The market as such. From the age of 16, I accepted orders on I was engaged in everything that brought money. I will not be revealing a secret when I say that mostly it was business websites and online stores.
What projects can you be proud of from those days?
First of all, the website — a feedback widget for sites. In second place, perhaps, the copywriting exchange noxon-text. It no longer functions now.
You said “programmer”. And you can call yourself an entrepreneur?
Of course, I am an entrepreneur. In this regard, I was interested in the blog back in the day. It was run by a schoolboy earning from advertising on his websites. At the same time, for me there is no division, or an evolution of some kind. I was the creator of websites, worked for a guy, then grew up and became an entrepreneur. No, at different periods of my life I could earn more both from my own projects, and from work for others. I do not think that this is a linear process.
The most predictable question. How did you get to blockchain? What about it attracted you?
It began with an interest in Bitcoin in 2012. As trivial as it sounds, I was attracted to the idea of a free internet currency. Free in terms of emissions, in terms of movement. This is not something that Russia or the US can block. This is more understandable money for me.
So you’re cryptoanarchist?
By no means. I respect cryptoanarchists, I’m interested in them, they are cheerful dudes. But I never considered myself as one of them. Anarchy is not the final state of affairs that the world of cryptocurrencies strives to. On the contrary, anarchy is inadmissible in it.
In which projects you have worked?
Until 2016, I was rather an explorer, not a practitioner. You can learn more about this in my Github. Mostly, I investigated the practical application of smart contracts, IPFS technologies, the properties of ERC-20 tokens. Since 2017, I have headed DAO Casino as a technical director.
“I am not expecting any owners of oil companies”
You saw a huge number of block projects. What good and bad tendencies of 2018 can you name?
It is best to start with the good, isn’t it? (laughs) People had just started understanding cryptocurrencies — what is good and what is bad. They started believing less, and thinking more. Even more important is that the exchanges are now releasing their own tokens, and this leads the macroeconomics of cryptocurrencies to a new level. The model works worse when someone is sitting on commissions from exchange platforms, which they once created. The profitability of the product tokens, in particular the crypto exchanges, depends on the quality of their work, and this is much more important for the community as a whole. Finally, it’s very cool that people are starting to pay attention to cross-chain projects (like Lightning network).
But even unpleasant things are still common. First of all, this is the inertia of investors who cannot affect the teams that they have entrusted their money to. It’s no secret that before the advent of the ICO, the motivation of the team is very high, but new motivation is needed after a successful crowdfunding campaign. In this regard, a large influx of Ether into the industry has served it poorly, as some have been spoiled, others have been deceived. Maybe this is why really big investors are not yet in a hurry to enter this sector…
Another trend! And who is a big investor for you? Where did he get the money?
Investors in this case, above all, are people who have made money on the 2013 and 2017 cryptocurrency boom. It is them first and foremost. The rate of Ether has grown, and they have a lot of money, that’s all.
And, for example, old fat cats, owners of oil companies and others? If you say “big investors are in no hurry” when should we be waiting them?
Look, I do not even think about it. You do not need to think about it. It’s unproductive to wait for these people. The worst thing is that even worthy products from strong teams are now finding it harder to raise the money necessary.
I will tell you another trend, it is neither good nor bad. Now there are a lot of funny ICOs, where people work “as fans”. They just like the idea, it cheers them up, and they invest money in it. These people do not hope for a large income in the foreseeable future from their purchased tokens. It’s something like donating money in games.
So you say “worthy project”, “cool project”? And which projects are the best?
All off-chain and cross-chain ones, especially those that work directly with Bitcoin, which for me remains number 1. Well, and decentralized exchanges with their coins. The future belongs to them, I will not tire of repeating it.
Are there bad projects?
There are no such projects. I will not be hating any projects. Whoever gets the money is good, and they are awaited on the market. And it is good as long as they get the money. Nothing new compared to the “old” economy.
“It is always difficult with strong people”
You directed many projects. Who are you recruiting?
This is very difficult! (laughs). Always in different ways, depends on the task.
No, we need an answer to this question. Let us take another avenue of approach. What is the main principle of your relationship with the team?
Our principles of interaction and payment are published on the site, they can be found. The policy of payment necessarily implies the payment of a part of the work with the tokens of the project.
Payment request form on the site. Any employee receives part of the earnings in SWAP tokens.
I am an adherent of a cautious approach to the freedom of the employee and his schedule. While a person works well, while he has a lot of responsibilities, and he does not fail us, then I’m ready to give him the opportunity to work where he wants and as much as he wants. As the scope of responsibility decreases, the tasks become more specific, a person should go to the office, work on site so that I and others see him.
With strong people it’s always difficult. Strong people are hard to force to work for a common cause. You cannot force a strong programmer to do what you need, but it’s not interesting to him. Of course, a lot can be achieved with money, many are motivated by it, but in the case of really strong people, we are talking about absolutely non-market amounts.
If I pay a lot, then the person works well, and he is interesting to me, and I’m interested in him. It’s the other way around if I pay little.
Are there any categories of people you will not work with or will you quickly fire?
There are. The most dangerous people, whom I will never tolerate, are those who do not adequately assess their competence in different areas of the case, and seek to tell others how to work correctly. You have not done any of “your” tasks, but you are already advising one guy, giving orders to the second one, and criticizing a third! Such people, fortunately, are becoming a rarity, but they are very toxic to the team. As for everything else, everything is trite — I do not like lazy people, who must be constantly kicked, dreamers, projectors, etc. I do not believe in evolution here, by and large. If a person is not a professional, you will not be able to turn him into a professional, or even an average performer.
Swap.Online is the only way”
How and when did the idea of Swap.Online appear? Probably, you will not even be bale to mention an exact date…
On the contrary (opens the computer). On November 22, 2017, in Facebook, I laid out the design of how to exchange a token for Bitcoin. Then I described this as a possible solution for exchanging fiat money and Bitcoin for the tokens of decentralized applications. I made my post in one of the Telegram chats for enthusiasts of the Ethereum blockchain. After some time, an investor wrote to me and said that he saw this text, and some of my smart contracts, and that he liked these ideas. Within a few months, we agreed on the terms, signed the agreement and I left the previous team.
Are not you afraid that by spreading these thoughts in FB that the idea of the project will be simply stolen by someone who is cunning and technically savvy?
No. Open Source in this case is the same as publishing the idea of the likes of ”I’m building a house, it has walls and a roof, as well as five floors and an entrance.” Nothing more. The implementation has nothing to do with this, and it will never suffer.
Well, at that time, in terms of implementation, were there some alternatives besides Swap.Online?
No. It was the only way.
But, after all, everyone was fine with centralized exchanges for some time? When did you realize that the time for decentralization has come?
You know, they are satisfied with almost everything nowadays. DEX is the technology of tomorrow, if not the day after tomorrow.
The time has come for some bold predictions from Alexander Noxon. When will the turnover of decentralized exchangers exceed the turnover of centralized ones?
In 2019.
Very soon! What problems of centralized exchanges your Swap.Onlinewill resolve?
First, it is the freezing of funds in the KYC / AML policy types. On many sites of this kind, for example, on the Korean exchange Bithumb, you can have as much funds as possible, and you will be asked for many documents that you cannot always provide when you decide to withdraw them. When you enter the money, you do not know whether they will give it to you the next time.
Secondly, this is the rate of exchange. The hour is nigh when no one will want to wait for 10 to15 minutes to exchange the Ether to Bitcoin. One or two minutes is what we offer our users.
Thirdly, this is reliability. We do not keep your money, we cannot break something and steal it. There are other risks, they are being worked on, for example, the risk of domain locking, in this case, the affected users may suffer, but we will necessarily make isolated desktop applications.
The cherry on the cake is the rate of our transaction commission. It is zero percent. It’s very easy to remember. Mining fees are 20 cents.
Impressive. Who is your target audience?
Well, first of all, the “hodlers”. These are participants of the cryptocurrency market, who tend to hold their assets for a long time without participating in short-term exchange trading. As a rule, they have a lot of cryptos and they are afraid to transfer them on the classic centralized exchanges. I outlined the reasons above.
In addition, highly-informed people, like blockchain geeks, they will come to us. They are interested in the technological side of the exchange and they tend to use the advanced technologies that we will offer.
And who will surprise you if they come to Swap.Online? Who is the “no-purpose” audience?
Interesting, I have not thought about it. Probably, corporate financial clients. Here, “Alfa-Bank”, for example, will surprise me if they come asking for advertising.
Now three short questions about your project. What is its weakest side?
We are young. Unavoidable explosive growth can demotivate the team. But I already faced this in 2013 and 2017, and I derived an important rule from those events, and that is that you need to have global goals and never stop even if everything is very straightforward.
Does it have a scalability limit, ultimate throughput, or something like that?
There is nothing like that.
In a nutshell, turn to the people who are visiting Swap.Online for the first time.
Leave me your mail: it will be interesting.
“I will play Civilization V”
Let’s talk about the future in the end. Can blockchain change the world, and if so, in which direction?
Yes and no. On the one hand, it’s very good that many people have become interested in Bitcoin in 2017, generated wallets, bought coins. Their life will become more prosperous, reasonable and interesting, and this is very cool. On the other hand, some of the fundamental problems of planet Earth cannot be solved by blockchain technologies.
Be Isaac Asimov. Now there is blockchain, tomorrow there is cross-chain and off-chain. And then what? What’s next?
I think at some point quantum computers, fourth-dimensional technology, time warping, all of them will be involved in this. It is very difficult to describe this now. Probably, everything will begin with quantum computers.
The last question for today. The day has come when you are tired of cryptocurrency and blockchain. What will you do on that day?
The answer is simple: computer games.
Games? Write them? Play them?
Write them.
Favorite game?
“Civilization V”.

Any current intro to macro textbook. It's best to stick to a university level intro book here because most of those won't try to push any sort of agenda.
Read up on money and banking. The standard textbook is Fredric Miskin (again get the latest edition). I thought the book was dry as dust (sorry Rick!) but it does go through the basics. If you are a serious investor you need to inoculate yourself against all the fairy tales from Austrians/bitcoiners/gold bugs/FED-haters generally that are floating around on the internet.
Another really great book is David Moss "Macroeconomics." It's a very concise book that he uses at Harvard b-school to give an overview to MBAs. It's actually more basic than a textbook like Blanchard, but it's so short and well-organized that it will give you the big picture AFTER you been immersed in the details.
Ed Leamer's "Macroeconomic Patterns and Stories" cannot be recommended enough for investors. He is a serious econometrician, but here he emphasizes the importance of "Pictures, Words, and Numbers: In that order." The book is all about forecasting the business cycle and gets you thinking about wrestling with the data. His examples are mostly US based (a large fairly closed economy) so you'll need to keep that in mind when you consider small open economies (like say the Netherlands).
Read Carlin and Soskice "Macroeonomics" - again the latest edition. So why another macro book? It doesn't hurt to look at things from a (slightly) different perspective. The explanation of the New Keynesian 3-equation model in the book is among the best. Go find the syllabus used at Oxford for their undergrad macro course to get some supplemental materials and essay topics.
Read all the reports and releases that come from the main central banks (Fed, ECB, BoJ, BoE). This is indispensable for being a macro investor. Don't rely only on the summarized, filtered version from the news. You want to get inside the head of Yellen, Draghi, Kuroda, and Carney and the rest of the people on the monetary policy committees. How are they interpreting the news, what mental and formal models are they using, where do they disagree? Modern central banking has moved toward policy transparency so investors need to be well-calibrated to what is being said and follow their lead in many cases.
Get a book on economic indicators. There a few standard ones somewhat skewed to the US audience. Goldman Sachs at least in the past, puts out guides to macro releases. Don't worry if you can't get your hands on these, just go to the relevant government agency website and there will be more details than you could ever want. Of course, it will take experience to understand how markets react to the different macro announcements.
Get up to speed on market-based indicators. These will tend to be the most up-to-date, forward looking indicators since they are based on traded financial instruments. An example is Fed funds futures from which you can extract the market's expectation of a rate change. There are lots of traded instruments that will give you insight into what the market thinks is going on for interest rates, inflation, etc. Options on equity indices will also give you information. If you need some background, get Hull's excellent introductory book on options.
Read the article on money creation from the Bank of England. Resident mod (and I hear also a very good cook in real life) MasterCookSwag
often provides this link in this sub when battling the above mentioned goldbugs, bit coiners and other loonies. You'll find that it is additive even after you've read Mishkin.
Read the book "Economic Policy" by Bénassy-Quéré, Coeuré, Jacquet, and Pisani-Ferry. This book is written by a group of academics/policymakers and ties policymaking to economic theory. It's not very technical, but covers a lot of ground and is very applied. It will help you understand what people at central banks and finance ministries are thinking about.
Finally, lest you think you know it all at this point, check out Uribe and Schmitt-Grohe's forthcoming book "Open Economy Macroeconomics," a draft manuscript of which is available for free here. The website also has lectures slides, computer code, and data so that you can really learn the material. Unfortunately, unless you are technically (i.e. mathematically) well-trained just reading the previous books in this list will not prepare you for this book since serious macro requires a lot more than curve-shifting. (Curve shifting is enough to be a very good investor, but if you want to know what the experts are talking about, you need to go beyond. But go in with your eyes open and read Romer's recent essay on the state of affairs.)
If necessary (for example to understand the Uribe book), take a step back and learn some of the technical foundations. Read David Romer's "Advanced Macroeconomics" and work through the superb programming exercises at Tom Sargent and John Stachurski's online course at Quantitative Economics, which can be done in Python or Julia. If you need to take another step back, read Stachurski's recent book "A Primer in Econometric Theory" for a gentle introduction to probability and estimation.
